Helicopter wreckage has been seen on Stevensons Island, and there's an oil slick on the lake about a kilometere off the island.
Conditions at Lake Wanaka were cloudy when the Robinson R-44 helicopter with one person on board was reported missing this afternoon.
Rescue Coordination Centre senior search and rescue officer Chris Henshaw says six helicopters had been searching in the area.
The operation will resume after daybreak.
