Confusion around the Fishing Minister's intentions as he announces changes to catch limits

Confusion around the Fishing Minister's intentions as he announces changes to catch limits

Shane Jones has increased catch limits in parts of the country for Southern bluefin tuna, Gemfish and the spiny rock lobster among others.

Kaikoura's recreational paua fishery will also open for a limited season of two months from 22 April to 21 June.

Environmental group LegaSea's lead Sam Woolford says it doesn't make sense why commercial paua fishers can catch at anytime, but recreational harvest gets a small window.

He says they're saying this is a sustainability measure, yet commercial paua harvest is going to continue year round.

Woolford questions if this is a sustainability issue because if so, it should be one size fits all.
