A distressing time for Gisborne, with two people killed and others injured in a mass brawl last night

Emergency services swarmed along Elgin's Lytton Road at around 11:30 last night after reports of an altercation involving around 100 people.

A double homicide investigation's underway and one person's been arrested in relation to the incident.

A 30-year-old man's in a critical condition, and a 21-year-old and 45-year-old man are both in a serious but stable condition, believed to have stab wounds.

Gisborne Mayor Rehette Stoltz says her heart breaks for whanau involved.

She's reassuring the community, saying Police are on the ground and they've had support from across the country.
