Children's Minister Karen Chhour won't need to front the Waitangi Tribunal

Children's Minister Karen Chhour won't need to front the Waitangi Tribunal

The High Court has overruled a summons for the Act MP to attend the Tribunal to discuss plans to remove Treaty obligations from the Oranga Tamariki Act

Chhour refused the summons and Crown Law had the decision reviewed in the High Court.

The Crown described the summons as unorthodox and unprecedented, and said Oranga Tamariki officials had already provided enough evidence to the Tribunal.

Chhour welcomes the decision, and says the outcome's important not for her own sake, but for the constitutional clarity it provides for New Zealand.

The Tribunal has the right of appeal.
