Latest figures from Stats NZ show nationally total sales are up 0.7 percent in the March quarter.
But sales have dropped slightly in Canterbury - down half a percent on the previous three months.
Canterbury Chamber of Commerce Chief Executive Leeann Watson says it's not all bad.
