Two boaties have been saved, after their boat engine failed

Two boaties have been saved, after their boat engine failed

The Rescue Coordination Centre received alerts from a distress beacon at 1.30pm, about 92 kilometres east north east of Whangarei Heads.

The Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust Helicopter found the launch, which had left the Bay of Islands earlier in the day.

As well as the distress beacon, the boaties had VHF radio and mobile phones, which can be useful in coastal waters though in this case they were in deep water and out of range.

Search Mission Coordinator Chris Wilson says all boaties to take at least two water proof ways to all for help, and this rescue highlights why.
