Figures obtained by Herald Premium show ten firearms police were responsible for were lost or stolen between 2005 and 2017.
Four were lost or stolen while being couriered, two stolen from an exhibit storeroom at court, one was lost and three misplaced.
Since 2011 two taser have also been stolen.
It shows that this year's theft after a door was left unlocked at Palmerston North police station is by far the biggest gun heist from police in years.
