A post mortem will get underway today on the body of a man killed in the Coromandel town of Waihi

The 28-year-old died when he was struck by a car on George St, around 1am on Saturday morning.

Police say the driver didn't stop immediately, but crashed into a fence about 100 metres along the road.

They believe the man and the driver of the car knew each other.

    Neither lived in Waihi.

Police would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the crash - or who saw a distinctive bright blue SS Commodore in Waihi on Friday night.
