A 27-year-old driver has died after a police pursuit in Whakatane
1 September 2019
The driver crashed a Mazda Familia, about 11 last night on Taneatua Road, after failing to stop for police, injuring two others.
Police chased the car for less than a minute before abandoning the pursuit, after deciding the car's speed posed too great a risk to its occupants and the public.
Bay of Plenty Road Policing Manager Inspector Brent Crowe says it's believed the vehicle lost control on a bend, left the road, became airborne and struck a tree.
Police weren't chasing the vehicle when it crashed but will be investigating the circumstances of the pursuit.
The Independent Police Conduct Authority has also been notified.
