Fifty-year-old Sheila Cheng was killed after the vehicle she was a passenger in collided head-on with another vehicle on State Highway 30 on Saturday.
The crash left five people injured and is under investigation.
The driver of the other vehicle was the sole occupant and is in Rotorua Hospital.
Cheng was an intensive care nurse at Whakatane Hospital.
Hospital coordinator and duty nurse manager David van Dijk says colleagues are saddened by Cheng's death, saying she was one of the many staff who treated and comforted burns victims from the eruption.
