A deep low and associated rain-bearing fronts is moving down the North Island, to encompass the whole country.
Auckland's Harbour Bridge could close, and Manawatu District Council has prepared five-thousand sandbags in preparation.
MetService Forecaster Aidan Pyselman says severe weather warnings have been issued for most of the North Island and much of the south.
He says that includes heavy rain, strong winds, heavy snow, road snowfall warnings and heavy swells.
Road snow warnings are in place for the Lewis Pass, Arthur's Pass, Porters Pass, Lindis Pass, Crown Range Road, Milford Road and the Dunedin to Waitati Highway.
The Haast Pass is closed.
