Two-time defending Commonwealth Games sprint champion Sam Webster misses quarter-finals

Two-time defending Commonwealth Games sprint champion Sam Webster has missed the quarter-finals, beaten by Trinidad and Tobago's world record-holder Nicholas Paul

Michaela Drummond has finished fifth in the 25km points race and Rebecca Petch came fourth in the 500 metre time trial.

In 2018 the New Zealand men and women's sevens sides won Commonwealth Games gold on the Gold Coast, but both have been reduced to bronze-medal play-offs in Birmingham.

The men play Australia, the women meet Canada.

Gymnast Misha Koudinov has withdrawn from the Games.

The 31-year-old, who is competing at a fifth edition, was set to compete in the individual all-around event, but opted out due to a hand and knee niggle.

The New Zealand team of Hayden Wilde, Nicole van der Kaay, Tayler Reid and Andrea Hansen have finished fourth in the mixed team triathlon relay behind England, Wales and Australia.

The women's bowls four of Val Smith, Tayla Bruce, Nicole Toomey and Selina Goddard are through to play India in the semi-finals.

Bill Russell, the cornerstone of the Boston Celtics' basketball dynasty that won eight straight titles and 11 overall during his career, has died aged 88.

He also won a gold medal at the 1956 Olympics.

New Zealand have won their first SailGP event in 11 attempts - the British leg off the coast of Plymouth.

The event marked their first podium race.

Fickle wind meant foiling was difficult, but the Peter Burling-helmed crew eventually prevailed over Denmark and Australia.

Golfer Lydia Ko's tied for fifth at 16-under par in the Scottish Open, five strokes behind winner Ayaka Furue.

Elsewhere, Daniel Hillier's tied for 12th at 15-under par at the latest European Tour event, also in Scotland - seven shots behind winner Sean Crocker.

New Zealand have chased 307 to beat Scotland by seven wickets in their solitary one-day cricket international at Edinburgh.

Mark Chapman top-scored with 101 alongside Daryl Mitchell with 74 in an unbeaten fourth-wicket stand of 175.

Max Verstappen has won the Hungarian Formula One grand prix and Marcus Armstrong and Liam Lawson have finished sixth and seventh respectively in the Formula Two feature.

Shane van Gisbergen's dominance in the Supercars series continues, winning all three races at the latest leg in South Australia.

North Queensland and Canterbury have posted NRL league wins over St George-Illawarra and Newcastle respectively.

Hawke's Bay have kept their hopes alive of making the National Basketball League's post-season with a 106-70 win over bottom-placed Manawatu in Napier.

The Hawks climb to fourth, above play-off rivals Otago, Canterbury and Wellington with one game remaining.

The unbeaten Kahu won their eighth straight game in the Tauihi league, this time 88-64 over the Whai who now have a four-and-four record.
