Thames-Coromandel residents are being urged to hunker down as heavy rain batters towns across the North Island

Thames-Coromandel residents are being urged to hunker down as heavy rain batters towns across the North Island

Heavy rain watches and warnings are in place from Northland to Hawke's Bay.

MetService says the Coromandel Peninsula in line for up to 180 millimetres in some places, with trees down and almost the entire roading network flooded.

Emergency Management Unit head Garry Towler says schools and travel will be impacted this afternoon.

He says the entire town and surrounding areas have been without power for more than three hours.

Towler says they haven't located the fault so there are still thousands of homes without power ... and says while the town is resilient, this weather event is having an effect.
