A state of local emergency has been declared in the Waitomo District

A state of local emergency has been declared in the Waitomo District

The district is experiencing widespread flooding and heavy rain, along with slips and inundation.

A number of roads are closed in the town of Te Kuiti, where the river has risen to very high levels.

Mayor John Robertson says there are people with flooding up to their floor boards.

Mr Robertson says the call was made by 7 O'clock, to ask people to please stay home but also reassure them there's support there if they need help.
