Another blow for areas still sodden from Cyclone Gabrielle, as MetService issues a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for parts of the North Island

The warning is in place from 1pm to 9pm, and covers the Bay of Plenty, Taupo, Gisborne and Hawke's Bay.

The thunderstorms will bring localised heavy rain and small hail, with a moderate risk they could become severe -- with downpours of 25 to 40 millimetres per hour.

It may cause flash flooding, especially in low-lying areas, and may also lead to slips.

Drivers are warned to take extra care.
