Civil Defence says flood water is starting to recede in Western Bay of Plenty

The town of Waihi Beach was hit by sudden heavy rain that swamped houses and submerged some streets.

The Western Bay of Plenty District Council says 11 of its 19 elder housing units flooded, forcing evacuations.

It's advising people to go to family and friends first if needing to evacuate.

The council says people should avoid the flood water, which may be contaminated.
