Orange Heavy Rain Warnings are in effect for the Coromandel Peninsula, Western Bay of Plenty, Tairawhiti, the Ruahine Range, Kaweka Forest Park, southern Hawke's Bay and Eastern Marlborough.
State Highway 2 north from Gisborne is closed between Otoko and Matawai because of flooding at Waihuka Bridge.
State Highway 35 north of Gisborne reopened this morning, after a night of heavy rain - causing surface flooding and slips.
Motorists are being warned to take care and expect the unexpected, with more heavy rain on the way.
