Bad news for the East Coast -- with roads closed by slips not reopening today

State Highway 25 closed between Tapu and Waiomu - north of Thames -- this morning after slips overnight.

Waka Kotahi says despite good progress made by contractors -- it's not safe enough to open.

Detours are significant -- motorists need to travel via Whangamata and Whitianga to the northern end of the Peninsula.

State Highway Two - north of Gisborne - is closed between Matawai and Te Karaka.

And in the Hawke's Bay State Highway 50 could be closed between Tikokino and Ongaonga for weeks - but a detour's available.
