Hot temperatures will continue into the weekend - though the North Island's set to be hit by rain next week

Much of the country saw sweltering conditions yesterday - with sun beaming across the regions.

MetService Meteorologist Mark Todd says it was an absolute scorcher yesterday for the east coast of Canterbury.

He says the highest temperature recorded yesterday was at Timaru Airport, which hit 33 degrees.
