The scene where a body was found in a burnt out car north of Taupo is described as a remote region with no sign of civilisation

An investigation's underway after emergency services extinguished the car north of Atiamuri last night and found a body in the front seat.

NZME's Waikato News Director Daniel Hutchinson says a resting stop is cordoned off on State Highway 1.

He says the nearest people in the area of dense forest are over a kilometre north at a truck stop tavern.
