Qantas is going up against Air New Zealand with direct flights into Australia

    Air New Zealand

The first Auckland-Adelaide flight takes off today.

The route will operate four times a week until May next year.

Herald Senior Business reporter John Weekes says Qantas tried to run these flights nearly 20 years ago.

He says a lot has changed since then, including an increase in the demand to travel across the Tasman.
