A sweltering weekend's ahead for many parts of the country - and Fire and Emergency's warning the risk of fires and wildfires is high

Canterbury, Marlborough, Wairarapa, Hawke's Bay, Tairawhiti, and Northland could be most affected.

Hastings is set to reach 37 on Sunday, and Napier's expected to hit 35.

MetService forecaster Thapi Makgabutlane says people should monitor the forecasts for where they plan to be this weekend.

She says they should keep an eye out for MetService heat alerts.
