A deep, magnitude 5.4 earthquake has struck the lower North Island, in south Taranaki

The light quake hit 10 kilometres south-west of Waverley, at a depth of 106 kilometres.
Within minutes more than 10-thousand people across central New Zealand had reported feeling it.
