The mayor of Horowhenua says a death and injuries by shooting at Waitarere Beach overnight, near Levin - are a massive shock to the community

Police, rescue helicopters and ambulances flocked to the beach settlement after a 1-1-1 call about 12.40am.

A man's dead and a woman and two teens are critically injured.

Horowhenua mayor Bernie Wanden says details about the family are slim.

He says they weren't in the village itself and it's not known who the family was or how long they've been in the area.
