A number of highways in northern Taranaki will stay closed until tomorrow - while crews assess damage from Tuesday's heavy rain

State Highway 3 west of Mokau, Highway 4 north of Taumarunui and Highway 43 north of Whangamomona will reopen at 8pm tomorrow.

In Waikato, State Highway 30 from Te Kuiti to Benneydale is now open and Highway 31 between Tihiroa and Kawhia should reopen later today.

NZTA says there's widespread damage, multiple slips and debris to clear.

Water levels have receded, allowing crews to begin cleanup using excavators and trucks.
