Orange weather warnings remain in effect across most of the South Island and lower North Island.
State Highway 73 is closed between Jacksons and Turiwhate, west of Arthurs Pass, due to an overnight slip.
MetService meteorologist Lewis Ferris says severe weather has moved up from the southern parts of the country.
Blustery nor-west winds are likely in the Wellington, Wairarapa and Hawke's Bay.
