People walking packs of five-to-12 dogs in Auckland must now get Council approval - in an attempt to improve safety.

Rules in effect from today mandates owners or commercial dog-walkers taking out large groups, getting a certificate.

Walkers and each dog must also display visible ID.

Regulatory and Safety Committee Chair, Josephine Bartley, says it gives consideration to commercial and private situations.

She says professionals can still resume business, and dog-owners won't need need a permit.
