Two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz has won his first round tennis match at Wimbledon in five sets against 38-year-old Fabio Fognini

Alcaraz had to knuckle down across four-and-a-half hours.

Men's eight and ninth seeds Holger Rune and Daniil Medvedev have been ousted from the first round by Nicolas Jarry and Benjamin Bonzi respectively.

Lulu Sun's chance to replicate her quarter-final heroics from 2024 have been snuffed out.

She's suffered a straight sets defeat to Marie Bouzkova , who now meets top seed Aryna Sabalenka.

The loss marks the fourth consecutive grand slam Sun has failed to advance.
