Auckland Council says current dog control laws are reactive - not preventative

Auckland Council says current dog control laws are reactive - not preventative

62-year-old, Mihiata Te Rore, was killed by three dogs on Tuesday, as she visited a home in Kaihu, north of Dargaville.

Kaipara District Council has confirmed the now impounded dogs involved in the mauling will be put down.

Auckland Council says the fatal attack highlights the need for urgent reform of the thirty-year-old Dog Control Act.

It has recommended practical changes - including allowing councils to desex high-risk dogs and allowing stronger powers for seizing dogs.
