Auckland University is taking aim at New Zealand's biggest cancer killer - by opening the country's first lung cancer organoid bank

Tumour samples from patients with advanced lung cancer will be grown in the lab into organoids that closely mimic the original cancer.

Researchers can then test different treatments on the organoids to see how individual tumours are likely to respond.

Team lead Dr Hossein Jahedi says Maori and Pacific peoples are around three times more likely to die from lung cancer than other New Zealanders.

He says it was important to try address a cancer that requires more attention in this country.
