Continued lockdowns may have been the final straw that tipped Wellington Phoenix defender Steven Taylor into retirement

The A-League club has spoken for the first time since Taylor made his shock announcement earlier this week.

Taylor has done stints in managed quarantine as well as restrictions around his movement when playing in Australia and India over the last year.

Coach Ufuk Talay says he tried his best to keep Taylor.
