More than just Transmission Gully is needed to fix holiday congestion out of Wellington

Easter weekend was the first public holiday where drivers could use the new 1.25 billion dollar motorway.

It saw significantly less disruption between Porirua and Paekakariki than drivers used to face.

But traffic was still bumper to bumper just south of Otaki.

Kapiti mayor K. Gurunathan says there's more work to be done in the area.

He says they need a secure link similar to Transmission Gully north of Peka Peka.

The Peka Peka to Otaki Expressway - expected to address traffic issues north of Waikanae - is scheduled to be complete by the end of the year.
