Nearly 200 people have died as violence intensifies in Israel and Gaza

Nearly 200 people have died as violence intensifies in Israel and Gaza

Israeli air strikes in the heart of Gaza City have flattened three buildings, killing at least 42 people overnight.

The UN Security Council held an emergency meeting, with international mediators hoping to broker a ceasefire this morning.

However, the BBC's Jeremy Bowen says a resolution is a long while off.

He says both sides have expressed their determination to continue fighting.
