Tiger and boar rescued from well in India after wild chase gone wrong

Officials say the unlikely pair fell into the water when the young tigress was chasing the boar.

A tiger and boar have been rescued together from a well after a wild chase in India.

Local media reported that the young tigress, which had been chasing the wild boar, accidentally fell into the hole, along with its prey, in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.

The incident came to light when locals arrived to fetch water from the well in Pipariya Harduli village, which is within the Jikurai forest range.

Villagers promptly called authorities to retrieve the animals, which were struggling to keep their heads above water.

Video footage shows the duo being rescued by the Pench Tiger Reserve team from the water-filled pit.

A cot was lowered into the well using a rope, and both animals were pulled out with the help of a hydraulic machine.

The tiger and boar were unharmed and successfully released back into the forest.

According to the reserve's deputy director, Rajnish Kumar Singh, the rescue operation took four hours.

In a post on Instagram, the Pench National Park described the rescue mission as "one of the most challenging operations ever conducted" and "like no other".

Following the incident, wildlife officials urged farmers to cover or fence off open wells in forested areas.
