Mobile outages, flooding and road closures - the impacts of the weekend's heavy rain is being felt by many throughout the South Island

Mobile outages, flooding and road closures - the impacts of the weekend's heavy rain is being felt by many throughout the South Island

All routes over the Rangitata River in Canterbury are closed in both directions after the river burst its banks.

Overflows from the river have been running into the township of Rangitata.

A local state of emergency was declared in the Timaru district yesterday and remains in place.

On the West Coast, a large area of State Highway Six remains closed due to flooding and slips.

Spark technicians have identified two fibre cuts at two separate locations in the South Island.

Some customers are experiencing broadband and mobile outages due to flooding and slips.

Teams were unable to access the location of the faults overnight, but are now working on repairing the damage as soon as they can today.

In Queenstown and Wanaka, crews continue to monitor high lake levels.

Some of Wanaka's wastewater services have been turned off as a precaution to protect the network.
