The grounding of a cruise vessel in Doubtful Sound as its pilot slept - could've gone far worse

The grounding of a cruise vessel in Doubtful Sound as its pilot slept - could've gone far worse

Some passengers received minor injuries when the Fiordland Navigator hit the bottom in January last year - carrying more than 60 people.

The Transport Accident Investigation Commission's found the master was likely impaired by fatigue, compounded by prescription medication.

Chief accidents investigator, Naveen Kozhuppakalam says it could've been very dangerous.

He says the boat could've ended up capsizing from structural damage.
