A push to protect Auckland's beloved mountains from going up in flames - as Guy Fawkes draws closer

A push to protect Auckland's beloved mountains from going up in flames - as Guy Fawkes draws closer

The ancestral mountains, such as Mt Wellington, Mangere Mountain and Mt Eden, will be closed in the evening from today through to Wednesday.

They'll close at 6.30 each night and reopen at 7 the following morning - and security teams will patrol overnight.

Tupuna Maunga Authority Chair Paul Majurey says even a single spark can cause long-term harm.

He says the mountains are part of Auckland's identity - and people should treat them this way.
