Tauranga's Mayor says a Council review into the deadly Mount Maunganui landslide still has value, even as the Government launches its own enquiry

Tauranga's Mayor says a Council review into the deadly Mount Maunganui landslide still has value, even as the Government launches its own enquiry

A Rahui's now in place over parts of Pilot Bay and Hinekite - or Mount Main Beach.

It also covers the cordoned area where recovery work's expected to run into weeks.

This week's extreme weather has displaced about 500 people across the North Island, leaving nine dead and one missing.

The Government's putting 1.2 million dollars into mayoral relief funds, and another million to reimburse marae that provided support.

Mayor Mahe Drysdale says the Government enquiry will likely take longer, and the council wants its decisions brought into the open.

He says they want answers within a maximum six months - likely well before any other enquiry is concluded.
