Heavy rain is still causing disruption in parts of the North Island

Heavy rain is still causing disruption in parts of the North Island

Both Papamoa Hills Cultural Heritage Regional Park and Coromandel's Cathedral Cove have been closed due to slip risk.

Tauranga and Western Bay of Plenty District Councils have put eight red stickers on properties indicating they are unsafe, six properties have been yellow stickered.

Just over one thousand properties, mostly in the Bay of Plenty and Coromandel Areas, are still without power.

There are also blockages on State State Highway 35 north of Tolaga Bay, Highway 2 north of Tauranga - and sections of Highway 25 in Coromandel.

Prime Minister Chris Luxon says while progress has been made after previous weather events, there's always more work to do.

He says there needs to be further conversations about the resilience of our infrastructure all across the country.

In the South Island, Canterbury is under a severe thunderstorm watch until 9pm tonight .
