Oranga Tamariki wants to make the most of dealing with contemporary abuse claims - not historic ones

Oranga Tamariki wants to make the most of dealing with contemporary abuse claims - not historic ones

Crown responses continue today at the Abuse In Care Royal Commission of Inquiry redress hearings.

Senior ministry official Stephen Groom says the Ministry only deals with complaints dating from April 2017.

Its former parent agency - the Social Development Ministry - handles everything else.

He says the Ministry takes a relationship-based approach that prioritises the survivor over the Crown.

Grooms says significant effort goes into talking with tamariki about what they expect from the complaints process.

He says they make sure children know they can complain - and that remedies are available.
