    New Zealand's new Governor-General didn't expect to be offered the role


    Dame Cindy Kiro will step into the role in late October - taking over from Dame Patsy Reddy.

    The former Children's Commissioner is the first wahine Maori offered the prestigious job.

    Kiro says she had no inkling when the Prime Minister asked to see her.

    She says she was surprised - but filled with a warm feeling at the honour of being asked.
