???1;New research shows Maori face higher odds of dying during or after an ICU stay

The study, published in the New Zealand Medical Journal, looked at the outcomes of Maori and European patients admitted to intensive care between 2009 and 2018.

It found despite Maori being on average 13 years younger at admission, they were more likely to die within 180 days.

Clinical research fellow Dr James Moore says they were usually sicker than other patients, when in ICU.

He says that suggests they were presenting to intensive care further along the illness trajectory, which brings into question healthcare access.
