    An evacuation centre's being prepared as a fire rages near a South Taranaki village


    Firefighters have been battling a blaze near Waiinu Beach since 2pm.

    The fire's estimated to be a square kilometre in size - and residents have been told to prepare to evacuate.

    South Taranaki District Council confirmed preparations are being made at Waverley Community Centre in case the fire spreads.

    The village is home to around 100 residents and a number of baches.
