A digger operator has died after his machine tipped over into a river near Gisborne

A digger operator has died after his machine tipped over into a river near Gisborne

Emergency services were called to a property 20 kilometres up Waimata Valley Road this morning, where the 30 tonne excavator rolled, working in the Waimata River.

An emergency service spokesperson says other contractors swam to the machine, but couldn't get the driver out of the submerged cab.

A police inquiry is under way on behalf of the coroner.
