Several police investigations are underway after the death of a fleeing driver

Several police investigations are underway after the death of a fleeing driver

Police were called to reports of gunshots at a rural area south of Rotorua about 8pm yesterday.

They say they located a vehicle of interest, but the driver pointed a gun at Police and fled.

The Armed Offenders Squad, Police dog unit and Auckland Police Eagle Helicopter tracked the vehicle to the Waikato town of Putaruru, where it was stopped with road spikes.

Bay of Plenty District Commander Superintendent Tim Anderson says the man has died from injuries, but the attending officers didn't fire any shots or use any force.

The IPCA and Coroner have both been advised.
