Northlanders are being urged to be fire safe, as fire crews dampen down the last of a major vegetation fire, east of Whangarei

Northlanders are being urged to be fire safe, as fire crews dampen down the last of a major vegetation fire, east of Whangarei

The blaze broke out in a gully near Onerahi on Wednesday.

About 40 firefighters are working on the blaze, which covers an area of about 14 hectares with a perimeter of 1.7 kilometres.

Whangarei Mayor Vince Cocurullo says fire restrictions are now in effect across Northland, for a reason.

He says it is dry at the moment, so it's vitally important to take the necessary precautions.
