A close shave for a Stewart Island hunter saved by his personal locater beacon- after spending the night alone out in the cold

Police were alerted late Sunday evening a man hadn't returned as planned to his Port Adventure hut.

The Southern Lakes Helicopter undertook a full night-vision search at 4am with no luck, and initiated a full rescue response.

Just after 10.30, the beacon was activated -- and the helicopter located the man and returned him to his hunting party.

Officers says it's a good example of the importance of being prepared for any outdoor adventure.
