A large hill near Queenstown has been left blackened after a scrub fire raged across it

Helicopters have flown over the Skippers Canyon blaze which started yesterday, and reported no activity on the fire line overnight.

However Central Otago rural fire officer Mark Mawhinney says wind is predicted for later today, so ground crews are heading out to make sure they haven't missed any hot spots.

Skippers Road is open however people are asked to avoid it if possible, as it'll be busy with Emergency Services vehicles.

A woodshed and vehicle were destroyed in the fire... which spread across 200 hectares in just hours.
