Many of the people on the flights were going to run in today's marathon.

Air New Zealand says its trying rebook alternate flights including additional recovery flights when weather permits.

NZME's Susie Nordqvist was sent back to Auckland Airport and told that people needed to go home unless they were there for essential travel.

She says it seems like many will miss out on the marathon which they've been training months for.
