Another round of heavy rain and strong winds is moving up the country

Another round of heavy rain and strong winds is moving up the country

Orange weather warnings remain in place across most of the South Island and lower North Island.

Milford Sound got the most rain, with 237 millimetres in 24 hours with Wellington getting huge gusts of 139 kilometres an hour.

State Highway 73 is closed between Jacksons and Turiwhate, west of Arthurs Pass - due to an overnight slip.

MetService meteorologist Sylvia Martino says the heavy rain won't be as bad as it was in the South Island yesterday.

She says the wind will be very noticeable for the lower North Island.
